On the second day of October, 2014, the Lord called Vera Clara Emilie Kuhn to her home in heaven. She reached the age of 100 years, one month, and 23 days.
She was the daughter of the late Louis C. and Minnie (Niemuth) Hannemann and was born August 9, in the year of our Lord, 1914, in Saxeville, Wisconsin. She was baptized into the Christian faith September 16 of that year at the Lutheran Christus Kirche, in West Bloomfield, Wisconsin.
The family lived in the town of Saxeville for about 6 years; then in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for 6 years; then in northern Minnesota for a year. Vera’s mother died there in 1926. The family then moved to Waupaca, Wisconsin, and a year later to Antigo, Wisconsin.
After instruction in the teachings of the Bible, Vera was confirmed in the Christian faith at Peace Lutheran Church, Antigo, on Palm Sunday, 1929.
She graduated from Antigo High School and on April 17, 1933, married Henry Kuhn, a native of Switzerland. They settled in Appleton and became members of Mount Olive Lutheran Church. The Lord blessed their home with four children.
In 1945 Vera and Henry became charter members of Riverview Lutheran Church. The first services were held in their home on River Drive, and Vera was the organist. She lived at her home on River Drive for 55 years. Vera was active in her membership at Riverview. She was a charter member of the Ladies Guild and served on the Altar Guild. She joined the Valparaiso University Guild of Appleton and was elected to a state office in that organization.
Vera enjoyed working with the women of Riverview making quilts for the Apache mission in Arizona. She also enjoyed traveling with Henry and being at the cottage on Lake Arbutus. Most of all, she liked to take care of her and her family. She and Henry saw to it that their children attended Lutheran schools. For that the children are very grateful.
Vera moved to Luther Haven, a retirement community in Milwaukee, in 1997.
In September 2008, Vera moved to Brookside Care Center in Kenosha. There she and her family celebrated her 95th, 98th, 99th, and 100th birthdays. She enjoyed those family gatherings very much.
Vera is survived by her children: Betty and her husband Bruce Marggraf of Muskego, Wisconsin; Rev. Henry and his wife Sandra, of Alta, Iowa; Ruth Ann and her Rev. Roger Sprain, of Sun Lakes, Arizona; and Barbara and her husband Greg Campbell of Tampa, Florida.
Also surviving her are 12 grandchildren: Rev. Bruce, Rev. Paul, and David Marggraf and their wives Kathy, Meg, and fiancé Jeanine; Henry and Richard Kuhn and Laura Mullins and their spouses Francine, Debbie, and Scott; Rev. John Sprain, Becky Schoeneck, Debbie Spaude, and their spouses Vicki, Tim, and Rev. Martin; Fenton, Matthew, and Charles Campbell, and Matt’s wife Allison and Charles’s wife Amanda. In addition, surviving Vera are 29 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband Henry, in 1985, by two brothers, Gerald and Gary Hannemann, and by one sister, Verna Antes.
