Born in Racine on August 1, 1943, he was the son of the late Roy and Dorothy (Fowlkes) Mattie. He attended school in Racine and was a graduate of Horlick High School. Bill also attended UW-Eau Claire and UW-Milwaukee. During those years, he played semi-professional baseball with the Racine Redbirds for seven years as their unique, left-handed first base man.
Bill was an accountant, working for John Deere and FS in Racine, retiring in 1996. Following his retirement, he returned to school for his travel certification and worked at Somers Travel for 10 years. During that time, he benefitted from his position as a travel agent and was able to travel world-wide. He especially enjoyed his trips to North Carolina where he could visit family.
Never sitting still, Bill enjoyed domestic travel, too, visiting casinos and taking road-trips. He loved nature and spent countless hours outside feeding the animals. He was a sports enthusiast and was a dedicated sports fan to his favorite athletes; his children and grandchildren. Beginning in 2000, he spent a few years coaching his daughter’s softball teams. Bill was also a voracious reader and had the ability to retain knowledge about almost anything, which made him an asset during trivia games.
Bill will be deeply missed by his significant other of 12 years, Janet Dugdale; his two daughters, Carrie (Jamie Jensen) Mattie and Laurie (George) Amon III; two step-children, Dana DiCello and Jeffrey (Amy) Dugdale; his brother, David (Carol) Mattie; 10 grandchildren, Parker Jensen, Lincoln and Harrison Myer, Chandler, Owen and George Amon IV, Anthony and Jacob DiCello and Sydney and Colby Dugdale and his special Aunt, Geri Baumblatt.
