After he retired from AMC, his wife Janet asked their daughter Christine if she had any work at her upholstery shop and so he started working for her tying springs and ripping down furniture. Dad and Mom attended all their kids, grandkids, and great grandchildren’s activities. He was a lifetime member of the VFW of Kenosha, the UAW of Kenosha, and a former Moose member where he was on a horseshoe team with Alex as his partner. Virgil was always trying new things- He grafted apples on to other trees, made maple syrup from maple trees, turned old refrigerators into smoke houses to smoke fish. Virgil loved to do crossword puzzles; he enjoyed doing picture puzzles with his daughter Elizabeth.
Every year Virgil would pack up the entire family and go on week-long camping trips (that he planned all year long) around the entire country- from Niagara Falls to camping at the Gulf of Mexico. He took an Alaskan Cruise with Janet, Brian, and Joan Comstock. He continued these trips with his wife until he was no longer able to take them.
