Born in Stevenstown, WI on April 11, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Beatrice (Lovell) Baker. Myrtle was a graduate of Mindoro High School in LaCrosse. She continued her education and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the LaCrosse Teacher’s College (U.W.-La Crosse).
On June 27, 1959, in Lewis Valley Church in LaCrosse County, she was united in marriage to LeRoy M. Johnson. After their marriage, they relocated to Somers, WI.
Myrtle was a teacher for over 30 years. She began her teaching career in Chaseburg, WI. However, she spent a majority of her time working at Somers Elementary School. She started as an art teacher and retired in 1993 as a 6th grade teacher.
Myrtle was a member of Somers Community United Church of Christ, where she served on several church committees. She was also a member of the Kenosha County Retired Educator’s Association, the GFWC Women’s Club of Kenosha, and the U.W. Parkside’s Adventures in Lifelong Learning. In 1965, Myrtle helped organize the first Somers parade and was honored to be the parade marshal again on its 50th Anniversary in 2015.
Myrtle enjoyed the beauty of her flower garden, crafts, music, attending theater and loved to travel.
Myrtle will be dearly missed by her husband of 58 years, LeRoy and her daughter, Julie (Tom) Harper.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Dawn Marie Johnson on May 23, 2017; her brothers, Marvin and Ernest Baker; her sisters, Margaret Frank and June Brown; her nephews, Billy Dick and Bruce Frank; her brother-in-law, Adolph Johnson; and her sister-in-law, Vivien Kamrowski.
Service Date July 24, 2017
Funeral Services honoring Myrtle’s life will be held on Monday, July 24, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Somers Community United Church of Christ, 9918 12th Street. Interment will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
