Born in Elkhorn, WI on August 2, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William and Alice (Pretzman) Singleton.
On June 21, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bristol, she was united in marriage to Richard E. Muhlenbeck. Shortly after celebrating their 63rd year of marriage, Richard preceded her in death on December 12, 2016.
Mildred began employment as a clerk with the Bristol Postal Service. At the time of her retirement, in September, 1989, she retired as the Bristol Postmaster. She previously was employed as a waitress at Brittle’s and Laura’s Hamburger Shop in Bristol.
Mildred was an exceptional baker. She loved spending time with her family and teaching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren the art of baking. Mildred enjoyed playing bingo and cheering on the Chicago Cubs.
Mildred will be deeply missed by her two children, Scott Muhlenbeck of Silver Lake and Deborah Merkt of Burlington; her foster daughter, Elaine Higgins; her three grandchildren, Matthew Merkt, Jacklyn (Steve) Fuchs and Corey Muhlenbeck; her two great-grandchildren, Colton and Weston Fuchs; her sister-in-law, June Nelson; and her brother-in-law, Jack (Mia) Muhlenbeck.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her two brothers, George Singleton and Robert Singleton; an infant sister; and her son-in-law, Thomas Merkt.
The family would like to thank the staff of The Addison of Pleasant Prairie, the nurses of Aurora Hospital and Aurora Stay At Home Hospice, for the special care they provided.
Service Date January 8, 2018
Funeral services honoring Mildred’s life will be held on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at the Piasecki-Althaus Funeral Home, 3720 39th Avenue. Private inurnment will be held at a later date.
