Lucille Susan DiCello, 91 of Kenosha, passed away in her home on January 3, 2019 after multiple strokes. In October 2017 she stopped golfing, bowling and line dancing at the Senior Center because of a non-healing leg wound. As 2018 passed there was always some new malady preventing her from getting back to normal. In August her partial loss of vision, loss of her use of her right arm and a change of her mental faculties were her final blow.
She was born in Dane, WI, and was one of five daughters born to Anthony and Margaret Miller, German immigrants. (sisters, Delores, Thomasine, Rosemary and Genevieve). Only Thomasine survives her.
Sadly, sports weren’t available to girls when Lucille was in high school. She would have loved to participate in all types of sports. So what she did was cheerleading with tumbling.
In 1949, she was working in Madison and met John R DiCello, Jr. who was a business school student. They were married and moved to Kenosha allowing John to go into the insurance business with his father. They lived on 22nd Avenue and Lucille walked to American Motors and worked in the factory. In 1956, the family house in Forest Park was built. Lucille and John raised their family in their beautiful home and now she passed there.
Starting in the 1960’s she began to golf and she became very active in the Kenosha Country Club. She was a member for more than 50 years. It was her haven for socializing, playing cards, bringing her children to the pool and of course, playing in golf tournaments. She competed in the Kenosha Open at age 89 and was the oldest to compete. She also was proud of the fact that she narrated the Spring Fashion Show for many years.
When John and she got older they would spent 2-3 months in Florida in Lakeland or Bonita Springs, FL. They loved it especially when their grandsons would come down to visit. When her three grandsons were young she would take care of them in Minnesota. They were shocked once when she cleaned up their mess of Legos with a gigantic broom. While she babysat she often would wash cabinets, scrub floors and do windows just to keep busy and help her overwhelmed daughter and son-in-law.
Her granddaughter, Sarah lived very close and she would always take her to the park. She also would take Sarah to the church parking lot so she could drive around in circles in a child’s electric car. More importantly she brought Sarah to the Kenosha Country Club for golf lessons.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church since her move in 1949. She remained a member of Holy Rosary even after her move to the Forest Park Area. She also was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader at Holy Rosary School. She also was a member of the Artemis Club who gave scholarships for college to girls of Italian descent. She also volunteered for a few years in Hospice Care.
Lucille is survived by her daughter, Jacalyn DiCello MD and son-in-law, Patrick Arnold MD and their 3 sons, Chris Arnold, Brian Arnold PhD and Mark Arnold MD and her son, Gregory (Karla Pauloni) DiCello and his daughter, Sarah DiCello.
She is further survived by her brother-in-law, Richard (Eileen) DiCello and their children, Kathy DiCello Zacker (daughter, Meghan), Lisa DiCello, and Michelle (Paul) DiCello Marik (daughter, Coryn).
Lucille was preceded by death her parents; her husband, John R. DiCello, the love of her life who passed away in 1999; a daughter, Diane who passed away in 1958 at three days of age; and her three sisters, Delores, Rosemary, and Genny. She was further preceded in death by her in laws, John R. DiCello, Sr. and Mary DiCello, who she was very close to and helped take care of before her death.
Lucille’s family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Michelle Gauthier; her special friends, Heidemarie Ermert and Karla Pauloni; and her caregiver, Katya, for the compassionate care they provided.
Service Date January 9, 2019
Funeral Services honoring Lucille’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2224 45th Street. Relatives and friends are asked to meet at the church for the mass. Interment will follow in St. James Cemetery.
