Born in Douds, Iowa, to Marvin and Vera (Gibson) Burkhalter, Lawrence lived a full and rich life. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Ellen Ashmore on August 18, 1962, in Steuben, Wisconsin. Together, they built a loving family and shared many wonderful years.
Lawrence dedicated much of his professional life to the community, working at MacWhyte Wire Rope Manufacturing and Bristol Elementary School. He was known for his commitment to his work and his kindness to colleagues and students alike.
In his personal time, Lawrence found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He spent most nights outside, enjoying nature with his family and friends, always keeping treats on hand for any animal that paid him a visit. His grandchildren particularly have fond memories of feeding ducks with him at Southport Marina Park in Kenosha, WI, playing card games during summer visits, fishing on the Mississippi River, and staying with him at his Florida residence on Spring Break.
Lawrence was a passionate fan of the Green Bay Packers and NASCAR. He spent many years helping coach his son’s fast-pitch softball team, sharing his love for the sport with young athletes. Lawrence took great joy in fishing, often visiting Rheinlander Wisconsin, Lake George, and the Mississippi River to spend quality time on the water with his loved ones. In his retirement, Lawrence had a passion for travel, particularly to the Western United States and Florida, where he enjoyed his winters with friends.
Lawrence is survived by his son, Aaron (Betty) Burkhalter; grandchildren, Anthony, William, Elizabeth, and Rebecca; sister, Celia Brown; and brother, Marvin Burkhalter. He was a devoted family man who cherished every moment with his loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ellen Burkhalter; daughter, Karen Bauer; parents, Marvin and Vera Burkhalter; brother, Anthony Burkhalter; sister, Lorna Burkhalter; and companion, Jetta Mezera.
Lawrence’s life was marked by his dedication to his family and his community. He had a kind heart, a generous spirit, and a gentle soul. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Memorial services will be held privately at a later date.
