Born on January 2, 1933, in Warren, Arkansas, James was the beloved son of Bennie and Ollie (Ganner) Marks. He attended schools in Banks, Arkansas, where he built the foundation of a hardworking and faithful life.
In 1960, James relocated to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he built a legacy rooted in love, family, and service. On January 5, 1959, he was united in holy matrimony with his devoted wife, Thelma (Coleman) Marks. In January 2025, they celebrated 66 beautiful years of marriage — a testament to their enduring love and partnership. James and Thelma had six children: Paulette, Deborah, James, Terri, Rayford, and Joel/Speedy.
James exemplified an exceptional work ethic throughout his career. He began at Potlatch Lumber Company in Warren, Arkansas, and later worked for Thompson Block Company in Kenosha, Wisconsin, before joining Northfield Block in Mundelein, Illinois. He dedicated nearly 40 years of unwavering service to Northfield Block, retiring in 2011 as the second shift supervisor.
Faith was a guiding force in James’s life. He attended church in Banks, Arkansas, before joining Coleman Chapel AME Church in Kenosha. Over the years, he served faithfully on the Trustee Board (Pro-Tem), the Usher Board, and the Finance Committee. His steadfast commitment to his church community has left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Beyond his work and faith, James was known for his passion for antique cars and his impeccable style. His remarkable car collection was unmatched—more extensive than the average car lot. He was famously known for his classy, pristine cars that always complemented his suits—if his suit changed, so did his car. He and his vehicles were always a sight to behold. In addition to his love for cars, James brought joy to his neighborhood by lighting up the street with beautiful Christmas lights and decorations, turning his home into a festive wonderland each year. He also had a green thumb and could grow the best vegetables in his garden, nurturing each plant with the same care and dedication he showed in every aspect of his life.
James will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Thelma Marks of Kenosha; his siblings, Bennie (Ruthie) Marks Jr. and Willie (Joycette) Marks, both of Kenosha; sister-in-law, Robbiezine Marks; his cherished children, Deborah Marks of Milwaukee, James Riley Marks and Joel L. “Speedy” Smith, both of Arkansas, Rayford Smith of Seattle, and Terri (Zerome Sr.) Cage of Chicago. In addition to 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and loved ones, James leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter that will never be forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie and Ollie Marks; his brother, Lee Edward Marks; his daughter, Paulette Agnew; and three beloved grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice at Home Aurora for their amazing care and compassion during this difficult time.
