Born on August 21, 1948 he was the son of the late Henry and Isabel (Neu) Heckel. He attended local schools and graduated from Tremper High School.
James proudly served his country from 1967-1971, in the United States Air Force.
On June 4, 1977, James was united in marriage to Scheryl (Krack) Heckel. They were blessed with forty-five years of marriage and two wonderful children.
He was a member of St. Marks’s Catholic Church.
James worked as a machinist and was employed by Powerbrace. .
He enjoyed fishing, watching football and baseball, deer hunting with friends and family, and most of all spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife, Scheryl; children Richard Paul (Karla) and Eric James Heckel; his grandchildren, Nicholas P., Andrew R., Jessica A. and Emily Heckel; his siblings, Ken (Carol) Koscik, Ed (Sharon) Koscik, Henry (Coleen) Heckel, Christine (Scott) Oliver and Patricia Heckel.
In addition to his parents and step-mother, Isabelle (Mockus) Heckel; James was preceded in death by his siblings, Phillip Biehn and infant sister, Rose Marie Heckel.

Funeral services honoring James’s life will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at the Piasecki Funeral Home.
Interment with full military honors will follow in Greenridge Cemetery.
A visitation for James will be held at 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
