Born in Kenosha on April 15, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Teofil “Ted” and Matylda (Hammaciewicz) Szelonski. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Mary D. Bradford High School. Irene continued her education and received a Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Charleston, formerly Morris Harvey College in Charleston, WV.
In college, Irene met the love of her life, Robert L. Dunn. After their graduation, they were married on September 20, 1952 at St. Casimir’s Catholic Church. Kenosha was their new home until their retirement, and then they lived in Hollywood, FL. Sadly, after 61 years of marriage, Robert preceded her in death on March 8, 2013.
Irene was employed with various companies that included: Kenosha Joint Services, City of Kenosha, Ocean Spray, Kenosha Beef, Wisconsin Dept. of Revenue and Snap-On Tools.
She was a member of the former St. Casimir Catholic Church in Kenosha and Church of Little Flower in Hollywood, FL. Irene was also a member of the Junior Women’s Club and volunteered with Kenosha Meals on Wheels.
Irene was very supportive of her children’s activities. She especially loved to attend her son’s many sporting events and cheer him onto victory. She enjoyed spending time attending Art Fairs with her husband and collecting Blenko Glass. Irene made the best apple pie and delicious apple butter.
She is survived by her two daughters, Lisabeth Eckola of Sheboygan and Malissa (Mike Timme) Dunn of Chicago.
Along with her parents and husband, Irene was preceded in death by two sons, Robert L. Dunn, III and John “J.D.” Dunn; her son-in-law, Jim Eckola; and her brother and sister-in-law, Mitchell (Charolette) Szelonski.
In accordance with Irene’s wishes, private funeral services will be held.
