Show Obituaries Show Guestbook Show Photos QR Code PrintHelen J. Burby, age 99 of Kenosha, died on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Vitas Hospice Ruth House in West Allis, WI, six months shy of her 100th birthday.
Born on April 10, 1916 in Kenosha, she was the daughter of the late Casimir and Aniela (Sklenik) Curlik.
Helen attended St. Casimir’s Elementary School, Washington Jr. High School and was a graduate from Kenosha High School.
On January 22, 1949 at St. Casimir Catholic Church, she was married to Lloyd Burby. He preceded her in death on January 19, 1993 and was buried on their 44th wedding anniversary.
She was employed with Coopers/Jockey International for 21 years.
Helen was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and a dedicated member of the former St. Casimir’s Catholic Church. While at St. Casimir’s she belonged to their Christian Mothers, Altar Society and the Legion of Mary. Helen volunteered her time to work rummage sales, festivals, and was the check-writer for the bingo games that were held every Sunday. She also washed the priests Albs for nine years and was a pre-school substitute teacher.
She attended night school for two years and took up LAT designing and fur remodeling. Helen was able to use her skills for her family and personal use. Helen enjoyed growing indoor plants, working on crossword puzzles, going out to lunch, dancing in her youth and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathryn (Daniel) Surges; and her grandchildren, Krysten, Jacob and Gregg Kosmatka and Greyson Surges. Helen is further survived by her three sisters-in-law, Winnie and Lori Zdanowicz and Markie Burby and many loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Helen’s daughter Kathy would like to thank Noreen and Kevin Wilkinson and Sugar Burma for their care and kindness over the years and Heartland Hospice for their end of life care.
Service Date October 17, 2015
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Piasecki-Althaus Funeral Home, 3720 39th Avenue. Interment will follow in St. Casimir Cemetery.
