Born in Saskatchewan, Canada on August 12, 1918, she was the daughter of Herbert and Frances Taffs. She came to the USA with them several years later. She lived and graduated from schools in Westmont, IL and Ingram, WI before moving to Chicago as a teenager, where she met Paul Alix, the son of one of Herbert’s co-workers. The families were neighbors and became longtime friends as did Grace and Paul, who were married in 1947. Shortly after their marriage they moved to Pleasant Prairie, where she had lived for the past 68 years.
Grace enjoyed being involved in her children’s grade school activities and served as a Cub Scout den mother and also Class Mom. Then she went back to school herself to fulfill a lifetime goal of becoming a nurse. After graduating from KTI, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse at Kenosha Memorial Hospital where she spent 18 years caring for patients before retiring in 1983.
In retirement, Grace and her husband, Paul enjoyed vacation cruises, road trips and plane trips all around the country. They were regular members of the Southport Athletic Club and then the Rec Plex. When not traveling, they spent much of their time exercising which kept them in great physical condition well into their 80’s. It also helped them keep up with their grandchildren. They were longtime members of St. Mary Catholic Church, and mostly recently, St. Anne Catholic Church.
Surviving Grace are her three children, Judy (Tom) Schoettler, of Mauston, WI, Malcolm (Dolores) Alix and Ken Alix, both of Pleasant Prairie; sister, Violet Callow of River Falls, WI; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband of nearly 59 years, Paul in 2006; her daughter, Michele Brittich; her infant son, Kevin; her grandson Bill Linn; her brothers, David and George Taffs; and three infant brothers.
The family of Grace would like to extend a thank you to all her caregivers and the staff of Hospice Alliance, Inc., for the special care that was given.
