He was born on January 8, 1951, in Winnipeg, Canada, and was the son of Adam and Wanda (Wojtas) Wielgat. He came to Kenosha in 1955 with his parents and sister. He attended St. Casmir Elementary School and St. Joseph High School, and was a graduate of Bradford High School, U.W.- Parkside, and received an MBA from U.W.-Milwaukee.
He was married for 13 years to Susan M. Stacy.
Gerard worked for nine years as a science teacher at Bullen Junior High School. After receiving his MBA, he worked as a Marketing Manager for CR Industries in Elgin, IL, a Sales Manager for Amstead Industries, and a Territory Manager for General Motors in Michigan.
He loved music and after his retirement, he learned to play guitar. He was an avid reader, enjoyed bike riding and roller-blading around Kenosha, attending concerts at the Lakefront, and playing cards with his family. Family legend is that all the kids learned math by playing cards with dad/uncle Gerry.
He is survived by his mother, Wanda; his beloved daughter, Jane (Thad) Pawlewicz; sweet baby granddaughter Abigail; sister, Eva (Steven) Barnes; loving niece and nephew, Kate and Nick (Barnes); and his uncle and favorite cousins in Canada and Poland.
Gerard was preceded in death by his father, Adam, and by grandparents, aunts and uncles in Canada and Poland.
Gerard’s family is grateful to Dr. Priti Patel, Kathleen Kaiser, RN, and Lauren Fischer of Community Care for their care and compassion given to him.
In accordance with Gerard’s wishes, private funeral services will be held. A family memorial will take place at a later date.
