George Hamilton Nelson, age 95, passed away at Willowbrook Care Center on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. George was born on January 24, 1930, to George and Helen (Hamilton) Nelson. He was a graduate of Mankato High School. George was a born leader and even in his teenage years, organized a student protest rally when his high school burned down. Through the efforts of George and two of his classmates, the school board built a new high school shortly thereafter.
He attended the University of Minnesota and continued his life of service through the ROTC and National Guard. George was called to active duty on October 25, 1954 and proudly served his country as an officer in the United States Army until September 28, 1956.
After his return to the US, he was reunited with his college sweetheart, Phyllis Anagnos, and they married on February 15, 1958.
George lived a full life surrounded by the love of his family and friends. He was known for his warm smile and generous spirit. He was a salesman and Vice President for Norman Equipment Company, and his dedication was made clear by the phrase on his business cards, “Let George Do It!” His devotion to his wife and son along with his family defined his life. Even after retirement, George continued to serve his community and was a Trustee for the fire department for nearly a decade prior to moving from Illinois to Wisconsin. George’s favorite hobbies were reading and flying. He piloted helicopters, airplanes, and gliders for more than 60 years and loved all things aviation.
George is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Nelson; son, Kirk (Shelly) Nelson; grandchildren, Benjamin and Madeline Nelson; and sister, Elizabeth Shriver. George was preceded in death by his parents, sister Nancy, and brother Richard.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at St. Lucy Catholic Church, 3101 Drexel Ave, Racine, WI.

Entombment with full military honors will follow in Sunset Ridge Memorial Park.
