I have really strong and pastoral memories associated with Grandma P. Which is funny because I have a terrible memory. She often cooked lasagna or mostaccioli and garlic bread when we visited her home and we loved it. I roamed her old RV and thought it was the coolest thing in the world. I learned to ride a bike in front of her house. Going with her to visit Bill in the hospital before he passed, and him giving Doug & I candy. Thumbing through album after album after album of family photos. Christmas and reunions and visits to extended family. Then more recently in my late twenties having honest and real conversations with her, somber topics working through life and end-of-life issues and anxieties. I wish I would have had more of those, and feel like I could use them still. And how hard it is to try and feel and express gratitude in a time of this sadness. But necessary because it is a way to share that sadness and emotion with others. So I am grateful to the elder care facility for taking care of her and making her comfortable before death. Grateful to family and friends and strangers that cared and looked after her, visited her and spent time extended time with her. Grateful to her for her joy, her time, her love. Grateful that she could pass after a long life well-lived with real moments of fun and joy and fulfillment and pride. Donna passing is a good reminder to slow down, reflect, remember to share time with the people you love. Love you all and I am sorry I will not be there for the services.
