Carol Ann Horn was born on December 17, 1938 in Clovis, New Mexico, the youngest child and only daughter of Philhoil and Mae (Waites) Horn. She attended local schools, graduating from Alamosa High School in 1956. She married Philip Schaut on April 26, 1958 and became a proud military spouse to her Airman. In 1968, the family moved from Los Angeles, California to Phil’s hometown of Escanaba, Michigan. There, Carol graduated from Bay de Noc Community College with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1981, and Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1984. She was employed with North Woods Nursing Home and the Delta County Health Department from 1971 to 1980, and St. Francis Hospital from 1981 to 1985. Later, Carol and Phil relocated to Cadillac where Carol worked for Mercy Hospital from 1987 to 1992, and Amicare Home Health Care from 1992 to 1994.
Carol loved spending time outdoors fishing and camping with her family and traveling throughout the United States. She especially enjoyed the cruises that she and Phil took to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, and Alaska. Her most recent international adventure took her to the Holy Land, on a trip with her brother and sister-in-law, in late 2019. In her spare time, Carol enjoyed playing cards and bingo with dear friends. She also found pleasure in crafting and embroidery, including creating over 20 heirloom-quality Christmas stockings for each member of her family.
Carol and Phil spent many years as snowbirds, wintering in Gulf Shores, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. She was an active member of the Cadillac Moose, and supported Phil in his many leadership positions in local organizations. A convert to the faith, she was a devout parishioner of both St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Escanaba and St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Cadillac. More than anything, Carol treasured time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Philip, as well as her brothers, Luys B. Horn and James Horn.
She is dearly missed by her children Kenneth Schaut (Sharon), Kathleen Adamson (Mike Jenkins), and Daniel Schaut (Carrie). She is survived by her grandchildren Shaun Whatley, Jeremy Whatley (Angie), Jane Stedman (Micah), April Adamson, Steve Schaut, Adam Schaut (Lisa Zimmermann), and Dustin Schaut, as well as great-grandchildren Eden, Patton, John Reagan, Anderson, Caroline, and Norah Stedman, Derek and Lucas Schaut, Nate and Jackson Whatley, Caleb and Lucas Schaut, and Kayce Schaut. She leaves behind sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws, nieces and nephews, and many other loving family members and friends.
