Born in Highland Park, MI on March 3, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Stanley T. and Isabelle C. (Foote) Richards. Educated in Michigan schools, she was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Ferndale, MI.
On September 24, 1949 in Ferndale, MI, she was united in marriage to Merle E. Westphal. They enjoyed 60 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on February 26, 2018.
Betty retired in 1983 after over 33 years of Federal Civil Service in the Defense Department U.S. Navy Base, Great Lakes, IL. During her years of service, she held various positions including the electronics supply office (E.S.O.), Public Works Department and Selective Service Department. Her many duties included receptionist, security clerk, purchase agent and research supervision.
Since 1975, she had been the secretary/treasurer, editor, publisher and historian for the E.S.O. Alumni (Great Lakes Retirees). After retirement, Betty and her husband have lived in Timber Pines, FL, Sun City West, AZ, The Villages, FL and most recently in Spring Hill, FL.
Betty enjoyed staying in shape both mentally and physically. She golfed, played tennis and was in many exercise programs. She absolutely loved her many travels throughout the United States and Canada. Betty shared her memories of attending her husband Merle’s military reunions and their month long trip to Sicily, Italy brought great joy.
Survivors include her two nephews, David and Garry Richards; and her brothers-in-law, Richard (Virginia), Rodney and Wayne (Anita) Westphal.
Along with his parents and husband, Betty was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas A. Richards and a sister-in-law, Dolores Johnson.

Memorial Services in honor of Betty will be held on August 6, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 21731 Spring St., Union Grove, WI 53182..
