Mrs. Waller was a wonderful woman. I met her when her daughter now Rebecca Stevens and her foster son Bob Underhill were my students at Bose Elementary. She was so supportive of teachers and education. She raised a terrific family who follow in her footsteps of being kind and giving back to the community. She will be dearly missed but will live on in our memories and in her good deeds. Sending my love, peace, and sympathy to the Waller family and all who knew her.

Fortunately, I have had moments of hearing Alice sing, mostly during my teen years. Hanging out in that Waller home one could hear a spontaneous croon when you’d least expect it. It was obvious that the gift of a beautiful voice was passed down. I would stand in awe, even as a pimply, chubby 17 year old wondering if I’d ever be able to sing like that. It turns out NO, Never will it happen. My hope is that I was influenced by all the unique women that entered my life as a child and kept in my heart the good and strong parts that I witnessed. If Alice bestowed on me just a small amount of the goodness she professed, then for that I am blessed. For what I saw in a steadfast manner was kindness, patience, humility, acceptance and faith. Not just in words, but more importantly (and more influentially) in actions. For the Waller family: May I hear in my heart the voice of my loved one lifted with my voice, to praise life, to hope for life, to join others on this circling globe in an “Alleluia”’ for the experiences we have shared and share even now, and for the ways beyond time and death in which we are bound to one another in gratitude and love. ~~~ Martha Whitmore Hickman
